I walk in the Susan G. Komen Walk for my aunt Marina.
And I’ll be walking it in heels.
Anyone who knew my aunt would understand why. Marina wore heels everywhere. They were part of her. She was one of the most stylish, loving people you could ever meet, with one of the biggest hearts you could ever know.
So when I thought about how I wanted to honor her, there was never really another option. I’m going to put on my heels and walk for her.
We named our team Marina’s Rainbow because rainbows have become our little reminder that she is still with us.
On the days when we miss her the most, on the days that feel heavier than others, we reach out to our guardian angel. We ask her for a little strength, a little sign, a little reminder that she’s still watching over us. And somehow, just when we need it, her light finds its way back to us.
Sometimes, it’s through a rainbow.
And when we see one, we know.
If you had the honor of meeting Marina, you probably remember her the way we do. Stylish, always in her heels, but so much more beautiful because of the person she was. She was elegant, bright, funny, incredibly loving, and had one of the biggest hearts you could ever know. She gave the best hugs, had the warmest smile, and had a way of making people feel loved simply by being around her.
Her light wasn't something she had to try to create. It just came from her.
It was in the way she smiled at you.
The way she hugged you.
The way she made you feel seen.
The way she loved her family.
The way she showed up.
That light is what she left behind.
And that is what Marina’s Rainbow means to us. It isn't just a beautiful name for our team. It is a reminder that even after the storm, there can still be light. That the people we love never really leave us. They continue to live in the little signs we notice, in the memories that make us smile, and in the love they left behind.
So I’ll strut these miles in my heels, in honor of one of the most elegant, bright, funny, and loving women I’ve ever had the honor of calling my aunt.
I’ll carry her with me in every step, just as she continues to carry us through the light she left behind.
For her.
For her light.
For her love.
For every rainbow.
For Marina.
