This is my 2nd year walking with the Komen community and registering for the Susan G. Komen MORE THAN PINK Walk. I was diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer in 2020 BUT the real survivors are those with stage 2 and beyond so I don't consider myself a survivor because my journey was not as difficult. I am walking in honor of Ann Marie Murray of Ft. Lauderdale, Fl. but also to support ALL women who have been affected by breast cancer, to include; my mother, Ruby Louise Riley who is a survivor, many from my neighborhood in MS; Linda Hunter, Freda Benfield, Minnie Smith, Mary Jefferson Barry, Carisa Barry Pope... some lost the battle and some won!
Ann Marie shared EVERY detail of her breast cancer journey with me. I have a PharmD and was able to advise of treatments and help her to understand labs etc., it was a very emotional journey as I understood and knew that in the end she was losing the battle but could not share it verbally. I prayed and prayed for a miracle but miracles happen 1 in a million... As we walked together in October 2024 which was a struggle for her, I understood that it may be her last.... sadly she passed away in February 2025 at age 40. She fought a good fight and I admired her dedication to God from beginning to END.
The one thing I would like to personally share is that WE must take better care of our health. Being overweight or obese puts us at 40% increased risk of getting cancer. HEALTH IS WEALTH!! The main way to end cancer is by eating healthier and exercising at least 150 minutes a week.
