On October 2, 2024 my life was altered unexpectedly. This was the day I was told that I had DCIS. After a suspicious mark I found, I underwent imaging and ultimately a biopsy, which rendered the diagnosis of breast cancer. Fear certainly overtook my mind, and I had no idea what to expect. Luckily DCIS is considered stage zero, but is STILL cancer, just found early enough to remedy. After much thought, and provision of statistics and facts about different treatment options, I decided on a double mastectomy. Aggressive maybe, but this meant likely never having to feel this fear again, and piece of mind knowing that the same diagnosis wouldn’t be given in the other breast. I could not have made it through so seamlessly without the support of my loved ones, especially my wife, my brother, my mom, my dad, and my in laws! This diagnosis doesn’t just affect the individual, but each family member and friend. I’m trying to bring awareness to the cause, as this is affecting women and men at a younger age each year. Treatment is costly, especially in the more aggressive stages. Insurance is angering and doesn’t understand the importance of assisting those struggling for their lives and fighting day in and day out.
