This year, I joined the Susan G. Komen community and registered for my first MORE THAN PINK Walk. I never imagined how personal this walk would become since I was recently diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer.

As many of you know, cancer has been part of my story for a long time. I lost my mom when I was just 21 years old. After her passing, my family and I became involved with the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life. For many of the past 18 years, we have walked, fundraised and supported cancer research in memory of my mom and others we have lost.

I have always been proud knowing our efforts helped support advances in cancer research while honoring my mom. I just never imagined that one day, those same advances could make a difference in my own life. Now I am experiencing cancer from a completely different perspective—not only as a daughter who lost her mom, but as a woman walking through her own breast cancer journey. That has given this walk an entirely new meaning.
