Hi, I’m walking in the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Walk this year, and not just because I enjoy waking up early and pretending I’m athletic.
Last year, I was diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer. It wasn’t exactly on my vision board, but here we are. After a whirlwind of appointments, treatments, and becoming way too familiar with hospital lighting, I finished radiation. And as of this April, I’ve officially been cancer-free for one year. Even more meaningful, the date of this walk marks my one-year anniversary of my last day of radiation. So yes, this walk is personal… and also a much better way to celebrate than another follow-up appointment.
I’m doing this walk with a lot of gratitude, a little bit of stubbornness, and probably some questionable stamina. There were days I didn’t feel strong, days I didn’t feel brave, and days where just getting through felt like enough. But those days add up, and somehow, they got me here.
I’m walking for the people who are still in the middle of their fight, for the ones who came before me, and for the ones who will unfortunately hear the words “you have cancer” someday. Progress happens because people keep showing up.....even when it’s hard, inconvenient, or a little overwhelming.
If you’re able, please support me by donating. Every donation, no matter how small, helps make a difference and keeps that progress moving forward.
So this is me, showing up. One step at a time, with purpose, perspective, a sports bra and comfortable shoes.
