What makes you feel connected to Susan G. Komen and our mission to end breast cancer?
I've been around cancer all my life. When I was a kid, you'd often find me in my dad's office doing my homework. But it wasn't all work and no play, I got to meet and talk to some wonderful people of all ages and on occasion, their families. These people all had one thing in common and unfortunately, it was cancer. You see, my dad is a doctor of radiation therapy and more often than not, what he was treating was breast cancer. Both my mothers-in-law, Beth and Carla bravely battled this disease, a stark reminder that breast cancer remains the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women worldwide. As a husband and father to two daughters, the reality that 5-10% of breast cancer cases are hereditary resonates profoundly. I am inspired by the progress in survival rates, which have improved due to enhanced screening, early detection, and treatment advancements. The fact that the 5-year survival rate can be as high as 99% when detected early fuels my commitment. Joining hands with Susan G. Komen, we can fight for a future where our wives, mothers, and daughters live without the shadow of breast cancer. Together, we can be part of a movement that not only saves lives but also honors the strength and resilience of survivors like Beth. Let's turn hope into action and make breast cancer a thing of the past.
Where might people get to see you with your pink tie on?
I will be out and about Austin on the evening of Wednesday, Feb. 7, and through Thursday, Feb. 8th. If you happen to stop by any of our amazing coffee shops - chances are you might run into me with my pink tie on. Please stop and say, "Hi."
What is one fun fact about you?
My favorite word is "smock." I challenge you to say it without smiling!
