When I was younger I would do the Race for the Cure with the female members of my family. I was in my 20’s and it felt like more of a woman empowerment thing to do. I remember seeing the women in the pink shirts and never thought that could be me. But here I am, walking for the first time in a survivor shirt.
I always got mammograms and they would come back normal with dense breast tissue. I was never worried but one Saturday morning in March, I was laying in bed and brushed my hand across my chest and felt a lump. A couple of anxious weeks later, I got the call no one wants to get...it’s breast cancer.
I started the process of talking to doctors and learning about this new world I was in. I opted to have a double mastectomy on June 24th. It was a difficult recovery but I had so much support from my family and my community. Unfortunately, it had spread to one of lymph nodes so I have been undergoing 5 weeks of radiation.
My type is extremely hormone positive which means it feeds and grows from estrogen, so I am just starting the process of being put into medical menopause, getting infusions and starting years-long medications that have some potentially scary side effects. It has been a difficult journey that I still feel like I’m at the beginning of but I have had so much love and support.
I am walking for all the women out there, just like me, who never think it can happen to them, who are scared but wake up everyday and just keep going!
