Val's Story:
After having my FIRST Mammogram in January 2023, there were 2 suspicious areas found that needed to be biopsied. I was diagnosed with Stage 0 Breast Cancer-Ductal carcinoma in SITU (DCIS). I had 5 additional biopsies, 2 lumpectomies, 16 rounds of radiation and began taking hormone blocker medication for prevention — I was ready to put this all behind me….
In March 2024, I had my next annual Mammogram and unfortunately Cancer was found in the same breast. The treatment plan was a Mastectomy because my breast tissue is dense and there were other suspicious areas. I had 4 opinions and the general consensus was to move forward with the Mastectomy to ensure that I did not develop invasive Breast Cancer.
In May 2024, I had a single Mastectomy, an expander put in and 2 reconstructive surgeries. It’s been a tough road but I am so grateful the Cancer was caught early. I am now Cancer Free and do not need to take preventative medications which caused bad side effects.
The Susan Komen support group has helped me tremendously throughout this ordeal as I was able to connect with so many woman that have gone through it.
