Earlier this summer I marked one year as a Cancer Survivor. What a difference a year makes! This year I will be running the Komen Race for the Cure not because it is a challenge and a milestone, like last year, but because I know how important it is to keep working towards a cure. While I was so lucky to be diagnosed early and have a great outcome- done with all surgeries and treatments in less than six months- I know this is not the norm. I have family and friends who have also bravely faced more difficult Breast Cancer treatments than I did. I’ve met, listened to and read about so many women whose experiences were much different than mine. Not only is there a need to work towards the big goal, a cure, but we also need to finance research for better medications, treatments and therapies, and provide funds for emotional support, education, screening and financial assistance to those who are still fighting. All of these are reason enough for me to continue raising funds for Komen, but the fact that at least one of my daughters inherited the genetic mutation I carry continues to make fighting Breast Cancer personal to me.
If you’ve read this far, you proabably know I’m asking you to either join me at the Race or make a donation. I don’t like asking for help unless I’m truly challenged. Last year I was challenged. The support I received through your donations and participation was overwhelming and carried me to the finish line (I had my thyroid removed 3 weeks prior and was literally dragging!). This year the 5k is a celebration but less of a challenge for me. On January 1 I registered to run the Detroit Free Press International Half-Marathon in October- this is my challenge for 2025. It turned out to be a bigger challenge than I had expected as I’ve been fighting a disc injury since March. So, same goal, different approach. I’ll be running (much slower than I intended) and mixing in a little walking (to relieve the pressure on my back) to finish the 13.1 mile course. Yesterday I finished a 12 mile training run to my mom’s new apartment- the goal is within reach!! Although the half-marathon is a month after the Komen, I ask you to support me in this challenge by either joining me at or donating to the Komen because It Takes All of Us! Please help me End this Bullshit with a donation of $13 ($1 per mile) or more, you know I’m good for the miles!
