My Story

Join Me in Waging War on Stage IV: A Legacy of Hope and Courage

22 years ago, I started my team, Waging War on Stage IV with Hipple’s Heroes, after my sister completed treatment for early-stage breast cancer. Little did I know then, the journey ahead would bring even more profound challenges. Since that first race, my family has been deeply affected by breast cancer. My sister’s cancer returned and metastasized, my grandmother passed away after battling the disease, and both my stepsister and I were later diagnosed with breast cancer ourselves.

Through all of this, the funds raised by the Race for the Cure events have made a significant impact, funding research that has led to breakthroughs in early detection and treatment. These advancements have made a world of difference for families like mine.

Julie’s Story: A Legacy of Resilience

At just 34, my sister Julie was diagnosed with breast cancer. She faced the disease with incredible strength, celebrating remission before it tragically returned as stage IV metastatic cancer. But Julie never let cancer define her. She lived life fully, fiercely, and on her own terms.

Julie became a passionate advocate for others battling breast cancer, sharing her story on her Waging War on Stage IVFacebook page and supporting fundraising events like the Susan G. Komen 3-Day Walk. She was a shining example of resilience, determination, and hope. In her own words:

"Cancer is the loser. I am the winner, because I never let cancer take over my life. I had cancer—but it never had me."

Julie’s words continue to inspire all of us in the fight against breast cancer.

Why I Race

This year, I’m racing to honor Julie’s memory and the legacies of all those we’ve lost, and to stand with those still fighting. Will you join me in Komen’s ONE mission to end breast cancer once and for all?

The Detroit Race for the Cure takes place on Saturday, September 13th at Milliken State Park on Detroit’s Riverfront. Together, we can help raise funds for critical breast cancer research and community programs provided by Susan G. Komen. Participants have the option to join in a 5k run, a 5k walk, or a shorter fun walk. Every step you take, every dollar you raise, brings us closer to a world without breast cancer.

Let’s Wage War on Stage IV. Together, we can make a difference.
