In July of 2023, at the age of 41, I was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer. With a long family history of cancer, I wasn’t surprised at the diagnosis, but truly didn’t expect it so soon. Over the next year and a half, I went through 6 months of chemotherapy treatments, a year of immunotherapy infusions, a month of daily radiation treatments, a lumpectomy and a final surgery at the end of December 2024 to remove my portacath.
Honestly, looking back now, it feels like a dream. Although I have the scars to prove it, and am a ways from getting back to my full energy levels, I feel completely healthy and now that my hair is longer and my face isn’t so round, I feel like myself again.
What a difference a year can make! A year ago, I decided to join the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. I was mid-treatments, my hair had only started to grow back, and I was puffed up from all the steroids I had to take. But, I felt I needed to bring more awareness to this cause and was exceptionally grateful to all the family, friends and colleagues who supported me on Race Day and with donations to our team. I was so honored to be the top fundraiser in 2024 and was even asked to speak on stage.
This year, I am proud to be a member of the SC/NC Komen Board. I am also excited to be partnering with the BASF Women in Business and Community Outreach employee resource groups to create the “Innovation in Every Step” team to expand our network and support.
Although I’m exceptionally thankful for the great care and modern medicine I received throughout my journey, I believe with more research, we can do so much more – we can learn more about the genetics, the causes and the cure! I am dedicated to Komen's ONE mission of ending breast cancer forever, and I need your help. Please consider joining our team and/or making a tax-deductible donation today in support of my fundraising efforts.
Your support helps us get ONE step closer to a world without breast cancer. Funds raised help support breakthrough research and provide assistance to those facing breast cancer today who need our support. Whether it’s emotional support via Komen’s helpline, financial support through Komen’s treatment assistance program, or help navigating their care journey, Komen will be there for them. In moments like this, your generosity can make a real difference. Together, let’s show breast cancer patients there’s a whole community standing by their side.
