Your gift could provide a one month supply of Tamoxifen, a drug used to treat breast cancers that rely on estrogen for growth, to a patient in need. Every 60 seconds, somewhere in the world, someone dies from breast cancer. Your gift will help save lives! Your gift could provide a screening mammogram to an uninsured or underinsured person in need. Your gift could provide a breast prosthesis for an uninsured or underinsured woman in need. On September 28, I’ll once again be participating in the annual Komen Chicago Race for the Cure--my 25th time! Many of you know my story, how back in August 1987, a startling diagnosis of Stage 3 breast cancer upended my life, driving me to scramble to find information and guidance on a disease that rarely afflicted a twenty-something woman, particularly one with no family history or risk factors. Years before internet access and breast cancer awareness became mainstream, ready resources were limited. But against frightening odds, and with tremendous support from a small but determined medical team and the love and prayers of those around me, I made it through a tough year of challenging treatments and gained a second chance at life.

Now celebrating 37 “bonus” years cancer-free, I continue to marvel at my good fortune. And I can never forget those who didn’t fare as well, those still in the midst of treatment, and those new to the fight. Thankfully, Susan G. Komen and other dedicated organizations are here to help. Because while earlier detection rates and innovative treatments have helped reduce the mortality rate by more than 42%, that stark statistic of 1 in 8 women in the U.S. developing breast cancer has not budged since my diagnosis. In 2024, nearly 311,000 women and 2,800 men will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in the U.S., and an estimated 43,000 will die.

Susan G. Komen is the ONLY organization that addresses breast cancer on multiple fronts to make the greatest impact against this disease, including research, direct care, community and global outreach, and public policy initiatives, investing nearly $3.6 billion in its mission.

On an individual level, Komen focuses on helping all patients in need—including those with little or no insurance who are unable to access support and medical care. Whether it’s emotional support via Komen’s helpline, financial support through Komen’s treatment assistance program, or help navigating their care journey, Komen is there for affected women and men and their families.

This unwavering dedication is why I choose to continue to support Komen, year after year.

Please join me in backing Komen in their mission by making a tax-deductible donation of any size. Your kind support would mean so much to me—and even more to all those who will greatly benefit from your generosity.

Many thanks for your consideration and friendship!

Love to all,

Bev
