When we lost my mom to ovarian cancer in 2014 my sister and I headed straight to our doctors to get genetic testing. We were aware there is a genetic tie between ovarian and breast cancer in some cases. Thankfully, both of us tested negative for the BRCA gene.
Unfortunately not too long after that my sister had something show on her regular mammogram. Shocked, we niavely thought we were in the clear.
I am grateful to say that she was diagnosed with breast cancer very early and had minimal treatment and is under vigilant survelience. We are super thankful that she had wonderful health insurance. We know that is not always the case.
Komen is not just a race or a walk. It's a wonderful organization that I'm proud to work for. It offers resources for those going through breast cancer that feel alone. Free navigation services, real people answering questions and providing the questions you don't know to ask. Komen provides funding for researchers that are making a real difference in the fight.
People ask me why we haven't cured breast cancer. Unfortunately because there are so many variations, it will never be a one cure fits all. What we can do is continue to research and help the folks going through it.
In moments like this, your generosity can make a real difference. Together, let’s show breast cancer patients there’s a whole community standing by their side.
