My Story

  • .

My story begins 11 years ago when my dear friend and coworker was diagnosed with breast cancer. She was only 44 at the time and the diagnosis was not only shocking, but devastating to her family and friends.   I admired her strength and  courage and will to fight.  She underwent surgery and I am thrilled to say is in remission and cancer free today.

Last March,  my husband was diagnosed with throat cancer. He had a large inoperable tumor at the base of his throat and his tonsil.  He had 6 weeks of daily radiation treatments and weekly chemo. After a difficult fight the tumor was gone, his next three ct scans were clear, the cancer was gone, or so we thought.  In March of this year he had a MRI to follow up on a previous diagnosis of prostate cancer. The prostate cancer was slow growing and the decision had been made to watch it.  The follow up MRI showed some spots of concern on two ribs and his hip. After further testing, and biopsies we learned he had stage 4 metastatic bone cancer, to which there is no cure.   This diagnosis is life changing.  Since his original diagnosis and prior to the start of his treatment his cancer has spread to his lungs and three lymph nodes.  He has had radiation on his hip and ribs, and been receiving heavy doses of chemo and  immunotherapy. He has just completed his third infusion, he will have a scan in three weeks to see if the drugs are holding his cancer at bay.  If so the cycle of chemo/immunotherapy will continue three more times then life long immunotherapy.  His battle is huge and many times his will to fight decreases, he still fights, for me and our kids.

In April, another one of our closest friends received the diagnosis of Glioblastoma, a very aggressive incurable brain cancer, and yet another friend with stage 4 ovarian cancer.  I am asking you to support not only the Koman foundation and Breast cancer, but help bring awareness to all cancers and understand the devastation the diagnosis brings.

My husband, who is my hero, is planning to walk with me on October 5th.  In support of not only our dear friend who fought and won her fight against breast cancer, but for the alll the people fighting cancer,  especially our friends, Debbie and Susan.

In moments like this, your generosity can make a real difference. Together, let’s show breast cancer patients there’s a whole community standing by their side.
