Faith, Family, Friends in the Fight!
My life was right on track in February of 2011. My husband and I met when he was in the first grade, and we have been friends ever since. My daughter was a thriving college sophomore, and after more than two decades, I still loved my job teaching sixth grade. Then I discovered I had breast cancer, my greatest fear. My mom had died from the disease in 1997.
It was time for me to fight for my life. I immediately asked for prayers and emotional support from family and friends. I remember one friend, Karen, emailed and listed several women from our small hometown who were survivors. My college roommate told me she wished she could go through the battle for me. The day I returned to work after my diagnosis, my sixth graders were dressed in pink.
Even now, all these years later, I am one of the lucky ones, I am a survivor. There is more work to be done and the work that Susan G. Komen does is remarkable, and we need to get them word out. Everyone benefits from the additional support that Komen can provide.
