Why Komen's Walk Where You Are?
Saturday, October 24th is the date for the annual Susan G Komen’s More Than Pink Walk Where You Are. This year Dale and I will walk again in honor of my mother who was a huge support throughout my breast cancer journey - attending and taking notes at all doctor’s visits, sitting with me during oncology treatments, going with me to the hair salon when my hair was shaved off before the drugs caused it to fall out, listening to my frustrations, cooking up comfort food, being there whenever needed as she always was throughout life. While she did not physically go through the treatments, her compassion and understanding kept my spirits positive. As the years passed, she continued to value and support Komen and its work to help others, both the patients and their families, especially mothers who were navigating with their daughters through the breast cancer journey. With it being a little over 1½ years since she died, Dale and I wanted to continue her legacy and felt that this walk provided the opportunity to remember her and her caring kindness, along with her support of Komen.
This fall will mark 13 years out from my final breast cancer treatment, and this year’s annual half marathon hike will follow the trails at the Highlands Nature Sanctuary. We hope that you will take a walk of any distance wherever you are - on a trail, on a city block, in a park, in your backyard, at the gym,... - on Saturday, October 24th (or near that date if the 24th is booked). While walking, please take a photo and then share your photos on Facebook and/or send them to me so I can post them into a reel, enabling us to be together virtually while supporting each other. Each year your photos and your support touch my heart and bring tears to my eyes knowing that friends and family from around the world are walking together to support the end to breast cancer. Thank you to all for being such dear and supportive friends.
More Than Pink Walk Where You Are is one of Komen’s fundraisers that supports breast cancer research and breast cancer patients and their families. If you wish to donate to Komen and our Walk Where Your Are cause, you can do so by clicking on the donate tab on the top right corner of this webpage.
