Madi discovered she has stage 4 metastatic breast cancer this past March after going to the doctor for back pain. She had been living with the pain, barely letting on how bad it was, until she couldn’t lift my nephew and was finally convinced to go to the doctor. Scans showed the cancer was in her breasts, spine, and liver; her doctors posited it had been growing for 8-9 months. In those months, Madi competed in her first biathlon, celebrated at family and friends’ weddings, showed off her curling skills, and continued raising her son. She tackled radiation and chemotherapy with pragmatism, planning to bring lottery tickets to the other chemo patients when she had treatment scheduled on her 29th birthday, and using appointments at Dana Farber in MA as an excuse to try new restaurants and visit with family and friends. In short, she’s continued to live life like the incredible person she is.  While there is no cure for Madi’s cancer (yet!), the treatments and resources that will allow her to continue living with cancer are only available because of organizations like Susan G Komen.
