My Story
Just over two years ago, I was diagnosed with DCIS- ductal carcinoma in situ.
As strange as it sounds, I was relieved.
Six years earlier, in 2018, my beloved sister Maria was diagnosed with stage four metastatic breast cancer. Her treatment options were eventually exhausted. She endured chemotherapy and radiation, but nothing could stop the cancer from progressing. Sadly, just four months after her diagnosis , Maria passed away at young age of 58. She will forever be my angel, in so many ways she saved my life.
Because of her I became vigilant about my own breast health and stayed on top of my mammograms, because of her my cancer was caught at the earliest stage possible and because of her I am here today.
This is why I walk. I walk for Maria. I walk for myself. And I walk for all the woman who are thrown into this expected, unwanted journey.
If even one person reads this and is reminded to schedule a mammogram..or reaches out to a mother, daughter, sister, cousin, friend or neighbor and reminds them to make their appointment..then every step I take is worth it.
