In April 2026, I was diagnosed with Stage 2A invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC), HER2-negative, hormone receptor-positive breast cancer.
Like so many women, I never missed my annual mammograms. In fact, I had my routine screening in March 2025. Thanks to my neighbor (my angel on Earth) and her own breast cancer journey, I learned that having dense breast tissue can make it harder for mammograms alone to detect cancer. Because of that, I asked for additional imaging. That decision changed everything.
My routine mammogram did not detect my cancer. An ultrasound and MRI revealed one of my tumors, and after surgery, an additional, larger tumor was discovered.
This journey has changed my life forever, but it has also taught me one of the most important lessons: be your own advocate. If you have dense breast tissue or feel that something isn't right, ask questions and talk with your healthcare provider about whether additional screening is appropriate for you. Early detection can save lives.
On October 25, my family and I will be walking together as Team Cheer Squad to celebrate survivors, support those currently in treatment, honor the loved ones we've lost, and help fund lifesaving breast cancer research.
