I’m walking for my grandma, Marilyn Neubauer, who faced breast cancer twice and beat it both times. She was the light of our family — the one who planned every family reunion, the one who always had the best hug waiting for you. A few years after her second time beating breast cancer, she passed away. Before she left us, she told me I could still reach her if I called on her, and now she shows up in my backyard as a red cardinal. She’s the reason I try to live life to the fullest. She never cared about the million-dollar house or the fancy car — she cared about family, and she had a gift for making everyone feel more loved and special than when they walked in. The family light has dimmed since we lost her, but every time I see that cardinal, I know she’s still here, checking in on me. I miss her every single day.
