Our Story

A Story of Love, Grace, and Courage.

By:  Ahgi

For Micky Mercado

There are some people who leave an imprint on your heart that time can never erase. My stepmom was one of those people.

She faced breast cancer with a strength and courage that I will carry with me for the rest of my life. Her journey was not an easy one, but somehow, through it all, she continued to smile. That smile became a reflection of who she truly was—strong, loving, graceful, and determined to find light even during the darkest moments.

As the illness progressed, she never allowed cancer to define the person she was. She remained herself. She loved her family. She cherished the people around her. And she continued to give us reassurance when, truthfully, it was us who wanted to reassure her.

What amazes me most is the grace with which she faced the end of her journey.

She planned her own funeral. Not because she had given up, but because she had accepted her journey and wanted to make sure her family would be okay. She approached something most of us are afraid to even think about with incredible peace and dignity. She made decisions with grace, ensuring that her wishes were known and that her loved ones would not have to carry that burden themselves.

She told us she was content with the life she had lived. She wanted us to know that she had no regrets and that she felt deeply loved. And she made sure we knew just how deeply she loved us in return.

That kind of acceptance takes extraordinary courage.

She didn’t leave this world consumed by fear. She left it surrounded by love, with her heart at peace and her family knowing exactly how she felt. She died on her own terms, with the same strength and dignity she carried throughout her life.

And even at the end, she was still thinking about us.

That is the kind of woman she was.

I will always remember her smile. I will remember her strength when she had every reason to be afraid. I will remember the way she faced each day with grace. I will remember the courage it took to plan her own goodbye and the peace she gave us by letting us know she was ready.

Breast cancer may have taken her from us, but it could never take away the love she gave us, the memories she created, or the mark she left on our hearts.

Her story is not simply a story about how she died.

It is a story about how bravely she lived.

She showed us that courage doesn’t always look like fighting until the very last second. Sometimes courage is accepting the journey, making peace with what you cannot change, and choosing to leave this world surrounded by love.

She smiled all the way to the end.

And I hope that when we think of her, we remember that smile—not because it hides the pain she endured, but because it represents the incredible woman she was.

She was brave.

She was graceful.

She was deeply loved.

And she loved us dearly.

Her journey may have ended, but her love will continue through every person she touched, every memory we share, and every moment when we find ourselves smiling because, for just a second, we remember her smile.

Rest peacefully. You fought bravely, you loved deeply, and you left this world on your own terms. We will carry you with us always!
