My Story
Men do get breast cancer! Our family knows this firsthand as George, my husband of 36 years, was diagnosed with breast cancer last February. Since that time, he had a total mastectomy, has had genetic testing, physical therapy and has been prescribed medication that he will take for the next 7 years. Although lots has happened this past year, we are all grateful! George may be a little more tired than he was before his diagnosis, but he is “cured” and feels blessed. For this reason, our family has decided to host a family fundraiser and to join the More than Pink Walk to raise money for the Komen Foundation.
Breast cancer in men in the US is not as common as in women, accounting for less than 1% of all breast cancer cases. When George told people that he had breast cancer, most commented that they didn’t even know that was possible. The lack of awareness and absence of screening leads to a delay in diagnosis and treatment. This delay can prove to be deadly. This is why we are getting involved.
The Komen Foundation is the only breast cancer organization taking a comprehensive approach to fight breast cancer by funding research, advocating for public policy, providing access to high-quality care and financial assistance. Creating awareness in the community is a primary focus.
George will do his part to create awareness this spring as a guest on WTAE’s “4 the Record”. He will speak about his cancer journey to remind our community that men get breast cancer too. This show will air in early May. He will also be featured in many public service announcements.
The Banky family is hosting a Kentucky Derby party on May 2 to raise funds for the Komen Foundation. Our goal is to raise $5000 by race day.
Will you please join our family in this fight and celebration by making your donation today?
