My Story
The Year 2019 brought unexpected change to my life with the diagnosis of stage 2b breast cancer. That entire year was spent in treatment – chemo, then surgery, then radiation. I encountered so many amazing people that year and since - in this cancer world that I had never wanted to be a part of. My faith, family, friends, GNC co-workers, senior leadership and even acquaintances all provided incredible support and helped me get through it. I will be forever humbled and filled with gratitude.
This journey did not end with the last radiation treatment. Drugs and their side effects, follow up oncologist visits, regular imaging all became a new part of this new life – as did the ever-present worry and fear with every cough or minor pain. I had to learn to manage through that, push it aside and carry on with the business of getting ME back - healthy and strong again.
I came to a realization during this experience that we truly have little control in our lives. A difficult pill to swallow for me – as I thrive on order and control, right and wrong, no grey – to which those in my orbit can attest! When confronted with uncertainty, a roadblock or something unjust - my go-to reaction is always “Well something needs to be done – what can I do?” And then I set about fixing the problem. I am a fixer. I am a take action doer. A control freak fixer – I know it and I own it. It’s not smooth or polished – but it’s me – and I had to GET ME BACK. I needed to MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
At work, I was invited to become a member of the GNC Live Well Foundation Operating Committee – in addition to my day job running Corporate Merchandising Operations – and commenced to begin the work of Fundraising. The GNC Live Well Foundation supports many national and local organizations as well as employees facing hardship across the country. We have been able to help GNC employees impacted by hurricanes, fires, tornados, CANCER and more. It is truly one of the most rewarding endeavors of my life.
I quickly elevated the need to support women’s health concerns, find a cure for breast cancer and provide support/resources for people going through breast cancer. Susan G Komen was at the top of the list. We approached them and formed a partnership. Last year – right out of the gate – Team GNC was the Top Team and GNC was the Top Company at the Susan G Komen More Than Pink Walk in Pittsburgh! I sincerely thank all the donors who made that happen in 2025.
This year GNC Live Well Foundation is the 2026 Presenting Sponsor at the Komen MTP Walk in Pittsburgh. Team GNC is dedicated to Komen's mission of ending breast cancer forever, and I need your help. Please consider making a tax-deductible donation today in support of my fundraising efforts.
Your support helps us get one step closer to a world without breast cancer. Funds raised help support breakthrough research and provide assistance to those facing breast cancer today who need our support. Whether it’s emotional support via Komen’s helpline, financial support through Komen’s financial assistance program, or navigation services to break down barriers to care, Komen will be there for them. Fun fact for the tried and true Black & Gold Yinzers – I’m told that most of the breast cancer break throughs have happened right here in Da Burgh!
Ending breast cancer needs all of us, and your generosity can make a real difference. Together, let’s show breast cancer patients there’s a whole community standing by their side.
Will you please join me in this fight by making your donation today?
