My Story
You know, my first year at the MORE THAN PINK walk in Austin was about volunteering. Violet and I got up early and set up for hours in the hot hot sun. And then just a few months later came my diagnosis.
Last year that meant I joined the walk in a new way. I joined as a volunteer but also as a survivor. They give you pins with your years of survivorship, and I insisted on them giving me a decimal point. I was not a zero!
I thought that this year would feel different. That the cancer would be fading a bit from daily thought, but life had other plans. More surgeries, several friends newly or re-diagnosed, and I'm realizing more than ever why the world needs Susan G. Komen. It's not "just" about community, just about financing for those who need support, or about research toward a cure - it's about the magic of combining all those needs and coming together for the better.
Please join the walk with me in October here in Austin physically or in spirit through a donation. The saying is true: Every dollar counts. Thank you for showing up!
XOXO, Ellen
