Kathy's Story
I used to dye a few strands of my hair pink in support of breast cancer many years ago, little did know..then I found a lump in my breast (through monthly self exams). I went to my doctor and because I had an HMO, it wasn't time for my annual mammogram I had to wait, really!!! So I waited, and by the time it was time it had grown. The results...negative, really!! I persisted and asked for a 3D mammogram, doctor said it's probably just a fibroid cyst, really!!! Turns out after specifically pointing out EXACTLY where the lump was to the tech (for the second time), low and behold the radiologist recommended an immediate ultrasound and when he started probing my armpit, my heart sunk, really!!! He immediately ordered a biopsy and yes it came back positive with lymph nodes involved, Stage 3, HR positive HER2 negative, really!!! Imagine if I hadn't been my own advocate and trusted my instincts, I may not be writing this today. Needless to say I changed doctors, changed to a PPO and was fortunate enough to participate in clinical trials with immunotherapies, chemo and radiation; I survived and I'm thriving!
Thanks be to God and thanks to the many who have contributed to organizations like the Komen Foundation dedicated to research, advocacy and the advancement of treatments, many have survived this horrific disease.
