My Story
My first breast cancer diagnosis came in May 2010. I was in absolute disbelief over the diagnosis, since I had no family history of breast cancer and I am faithful with having my annual mammograms. When I heard the word “cancer” I immediately thought that I had been handed a death sentence. I began thinking to myself, “I am a wife and a working mother of twin teenagers; therefore, I don’t have time for a pity party”. So, on May 26, 2010 which my twins’ 15th birthday, I had a partial mastectomy. Following 7 weeks of radiation treatment, I was blessed to remain cancer free for two years.
In October 2010 I was able to attend my first Susan Komen walk and fundraise it was overwhelming meeting women that had over cancer and some still enduring treatments but it was encouraging to me to know you can survive. I was inspired to raised money every year and I have been recognized by Susan Komen organization by sharing my breast cancer journey on the local CBS afternoon news.
However, on October 2012, midway through my fundraising campaign to benefit the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, the cancer returned. On November 7, 2012, I had a bilateral mastectomy following implant surgery that took place on February 4, 2013. Early detection saves lives!!!!
