My Story

20 Years Ago.....

July 11, 2005 was the day I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I cried for 4 days and on the 5th day I told myself I would fight like crazy, do everything I needed to, and stay positive. If only it was so easy. Looking back that pea-sized lump created lows and highs that I'd never experienced before. At the end of it all I became closer to family and friends, made new friendships, and have a pretty positive outlook on life. I have an insane amount of gratitude for all of my doctors, nurses, and physical therapist's nurturing care and the relationships we still have today. Whenever an issue arises, they are responsive. Lastly, I am so grateful for Komen and their reminders to perform a monthly breast self-exam. Their outreach in the community is incredible. Early diagnosis saves lives and Komen saved mine.

With advances in genetic testing, I now know that I was born with a genetic mutation, TP53. It was almost certain I would get breast cancer by my mid 30's. Neither of my parents are carriers, I'm just that lucky. On the bright side, I finally have additional insight and am proactively monitored. Annual MRI's are a blast! (Not really, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.)

The fight still isn’t over, and breast cancer affects too many friends and family. Please join me at the walk on Sunday, September 28 or consider a donation to Komen so they can continue their research, advocacy, and outreach.

I won't give up!! We've got this!!
