My Story
My grandmother, Evelyn Ronsman, passed from breast cancer at the age of 48 in 1966. Her sister, who we all called Aunt Lilah, had a double mastectomy due to breast cancer. She passed in her 90’s. My aunt Barbara Maertz, my grandmother’s daughter, was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer where she also had a double mastectomy. My dad had prostate cancer, which is the male equivalent of breast cancer (my grandmother’s son).
I am now being seen at CTCA every six months due to my high risk of breast cancer and testing positive for the BRCA 1 gene. A few concerns have been seen, but nothing that has equaled to breast cancer.
I walk because I never got to meet my grandmother. I walk because of the many family’s who say goodbye to loved ones way too soon and with so much pain. I walk for those currently going through treatment and for those who’ve courageously barreled this disease and have found some freedom. Each person in my family who has had a screening survived.
