My Story
I got my stage 3 breast cancer diagnosis at 46. I had an all clear annual mammogram earlier that year, in March of 2008.
But something wasn?t right. I didn?t feel good and by the end of June I found myself in the hospital for a blood transfusion and we were running tests to find out what the heck was going on.
On July 3rd I was diagnosed with colon cancer. Surgery would take half my colon and 17 lymph nodes.
I still can?t believe that a PET scan for the colon cancer lead to the detection of a pin sized dot on my breast. One that the surgeon and radiologist originally thought was an anomaly.
Thank GOD they decided to be thorough and run a breast MRI while I was in the hospital recovering from a complete ascending colon resection.
That MRI lead to a needle biopsy confirming breast cancer. WAIT?WHAT?
It was back to the hospital for me for a breast lumpectomy and the removal of 17 lymph nodes. My breast cancer was also stage 3.
Are you doing the math??? Bone marrow biopsy, colonoscopy, PET scan, breast MRI, needle biopsy, 2 surgeries, 14 days in the hospital, 16 weeks chemotherapy, 12 weeks radiation.
I was fortunate enough to have a phenomenal surgeon and oncologist, great insurance, a fantastic company who gave me a paid leave and an awesome support group. But so many women do not have any of that.
And that?s why I support Susan G Komen. That?s why I fund raise, thanks why I walk. Because every single cancer patient needs this and I can pay it forward. Will you help me?
October is Breast cancer awareness month. We have 36 days to make a huge difference in research and support. I?ve been cancer free for 17 years will you help me make that possible for someone else?
