My Story

Last year in May, I discovered a lump in my right breast. I contacted my doctor and went in for an ultrasound and mammogram, then subsequently I went in for a biopsy.  As a result, I was diagnosed with Stage 2B breast cancer. This was very shocking news to me and I was overwhelmed with emotions. I also did not know how I was going to break the news to my family, especially my kids, and my close friends.

In July 2024, I started chemotherapy in conjunction with immunotherapy.  The first phase went well as I still enjoyed my favorite foods, had energy, and operated almost as usual.  However, the second phase with new chemo drugs took a toll on my appetite, my weight, my energy levels, and more. I did not complete treatment until February 2025 because my white blood cell count was too low causing delays in my treatment.  Nevertheless, I was extremely grateful for all the support that I received during this time.  My oncologist and the oncology team were phenomenal and I always had a family member or friend attend my treatments with me.

In March of 2025, I had a double mastectomy including some reconstruction.  It was certainly a scary day and I was anxious. The surgery lasted 12 hours and I was in the ICU for several days after to recover. Recovery at home took time but went well as I had family and friends assist me with my needs.  The pathology report after surgery showed no sign of the cancer in my lymph nodes which was great news. However because there was residual of the tumor still present at surgery, my oncologist has advised that I take chemo pills for 9 cycles starting in November.

To date, I am feeling great!  I am doing immunotherapy every 3 weeks which doesn?t seem to have any side effects.  Once I start on the chemo pills, it will probably be a different story but I am just taking it one day at a time.  I am truly grateful for all the support that I have had through this journey and for the wonderful doctors and nurses who have guided me along the way.  Because of this and the many other people who are tackling this disease, I want to join the effort to eradicate cancer!!

Their mission (Susan G. Komen) is to end breast cancer forever!! They can count on me to support their cause and for my family to join the Walk Where You Are MORE THAN PINK Walk on October 25th.  Ending breast cancer needs all of us!  Please join me in this fight!!
