My personal breast cancer story
I wanted to share some very personal information with all of you as I ask for a donation to the Komen Los Angeles More Than Pink Walk.
I was diagnosed with breast cancer in late October of 2021with and underwent bilaterial mastectomy surgery in mid November of the same year. The cancer was discovered during a routine mammogram and subsequent biopsy. I?ve been diligent since I was 35 years old in having mammograms as my mother, her mother and my first cousin all had breast cancer. I knew it was just a matter of time even though there were no genetic markers.
The tumors in both breasts were miniscule but aggressive. Thanks to the technology of today, they were detected very early. The surgery was significant and recovery was slow. I also had reconstruction after 6 months. I was very, very lucky that the cancer was found so early as I had no chemotherapy or radiation therapy, I just took a pill for a year. Today I am cancer free, thriving and extremely grateful to all of those who helped me during that most difficult time.
The statistics for breast cancer are grim, 1 in every 8 women will have breast cancer, in Orange County the statistic is 3 in every 8. These walks make a difference in providing needed dollars that fund research and technology like the kind that saved my life. Hopefully, we will find a cure one day.
I am asking for donations to this most important cause. I have donated and will walk on the 26th of October. I hope to see your donation and I extend an invitation to come walk with me!
Thank you!
