My Breast Cancer Journey: From Diagnosis to Determination
On December 4, 2024, my life took an unexpected turn. While on a business trip in Germany—far from home and family—I received a call that would change everything. The imaging center where I had my routine yearly mammogram informed me that I had tested ERPR+ for DCIS with invasive carcinoma. I was stunned. I had no symptoms, no warning signs—just the quiet power of preventive screening doing its job.
Despite the shock, I was grateful. Grateful that I had kept up with my yearly mammograms. That simple act of self-care gave me a fighting chance.
Later that month, I was on a previously planned cruise. Even from out at sea, I began setting up appointments, determined to face this head-on. In early January, I met with a renowned oncologist, referred by a dear friend. What followed was a whirlwind of tests, blood work, and a difficult second opinion that left me emotionally drained, but the emotional as well as the love of my husband, family and friends, kept me strong. On February 19, I underwent a lumpectomy, followed by five weeks of radiation therapy. It was a physically and emotionally demanding journey, but I never lost sight of the importance of early detection and the power of proactive care along with healthy eating and some life changes.
I have truly been blessed with a strong, loving support system! I’m sharing my story not for sympathy, but for awareness. Breast cancer doesn’t always come with symptoms. It doesn’t wait for a convenient time. But yearly mammograms and preventive checkups can catch it early—when treatment is most effective and outcomes are most hopeful.
