When we first found out that our mom had breast cancer, we were left speechless and absolutely devastated. Our first reaction was to be sad and shut down as anyone would, but we had to set aside our emotions to consider how she was feeling and determine the best way to navigate the journey together. Cancer is not a battle that anyone should have to fight alone. We were her backbone through one of the most challenging times of her life. Together we faced every challenge head on and were actively engaged from joining phone calls from her medical team, attending countless doctor appointments, attending chemo & radiation treatments, etc. Her breast cancer diagnosis was found to be metastatic and unfortunately after a long 8-year battle, we lost the woman that made us who we are today, our mom. Her journey with metastatic breast cancer was a testament to the power of self-advocacy. Her resilience and determination through her journey inspired us to always be headstrong and advocate for our own health. Genetic testing showed that we both had a lifetime risk of 39% of developing breast cancer. Through various tests, scans, and preventative surgeries we have lowered our lifetime risk to less than 6%. Always advocate for yourself and those you love!
