My Story
At 10 week pregnant I discovered a lump in my left breast. My OB and the ultrasound tech both thought that it would be benign, but sent me for a biopsy just to be safe.
At 14 weeks pregnant I was diagnosed with Grade 3 Stage 2 Triple Negative Breast Cancer. The call came at 6:00pm on a Friday night and our worlds were shattered. My first questions were “the baby, the baby will it be ok?” then “Will I get to see my children grow?” I was told yes to both and that the disease was not only treatable, but curable.
After meeting with my team a plan was put together.
While pregnant baby and I received 4 rounds of AC chemo followed by a lumpectomy. I was then given time to heal and rest while we prepared for our little one.
On July 14th we welcomed the most perfect baby boy into the world. Even with going through so much in utero he was 100% healthy. To say we were amazed was an understatement
Following his birth I was given 3 weeks to recover. I then began and completed 15 rounds of radiation. Followed by 5 more chemo infusions and 8 rounds of oral chemo.
I rang the bell in May 2024 and continue to have no evidence of disease.
I share my story so that others will remember to get checked. This was a fluke. It is not in my genetics. I tested negative. However, 1 in 8 women will get breast cancer in their life.
Pregnant with cancer is a thing, but most don’t know about it. Many more including smaller hospital systems will tell you it’s not possible to treat while pregnant. I am here to tell you it is.
