My Story
On December 24, 2024 I went for my annual screening mammogram. On New Year’s Eve, I received a call from the radiology department, telling me that I needed to come back in for additional imaging. In January, I underwent additional testing: 3D mammogram and ultrasound, and was informed that there was a solid mass towards the posterior part of my left breast that would require a biopsy. On February 16th I had a needle biopsy and on February 20th, I received the news that I had invasive ductal cell carcinoma. In that moment, I had all the fears and feels and my mind was flooded with so many what ifs! My doctor immediately referred me to a nurse navigator, who helped me navigate the many next steps, which consisted of additional labs, more imaging, and additional biopsies.
One week following my diagnosis I met with a breast surgeon. Her first words to me were, “This is curable and we’re going to take care of you.”Those words gave me so much hope! On April 2nd, I underwent a double mastectomy with breast reconstruction. Fortunately, the cancer was early stage and chemo and radiation weren’t indicated. For the next 5-10 years I will take tamoxifen to suppress my estrogen and prevent the cancer from returning in a distant part of my body. This year I am walking for me and for all the other breast cancer warriors who’ve come before me and who have helped me navigate this life changing event. Early detection saved my life!
