May 17th, 2024, the phone rang. This call changed the world as we knew it. The results from the biopsy came in and Margie was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer that was triple negative and extremely aggressive. We were scared as it had already began to spread. This was the beginning of Margie's Project Always. We promised each other that no matter what, we would always be there.
She is coming up on a year since that phone call. She had weekly chemo treatment, more office visits than I thought possible, and many more scares. Surgery happened in November and then more chemo. This round hit hard enough to spend days in the hospital on multiple occasions.
She is now on the final treatments. We go to everything together. She is the strongest person I know. Going through all this, continuing to work in her role as a high school teacher, leading the school's National Honor Society as the sponsor, and being a part of every family event and gathering possible. When I say she is strong, I mean she has more fight in her than anyone I know.
She also had a wonderful team with Mercy. Going through something builds connections. The team as Mercy South has been wonderful. It takes a special kind of person to do this day in and day out. They are all special. We are so very thankful for each and everyone of them.
I do this for my wife. I do this to give others a chance to have "always". As I walk this event, I will continue to hold her hand as we do this together as we have fought together since the first phone call.
