Those of you who know me, know that cancer has affected my life in ways I never could have imagined. Breast cancer was the first. I lost my best friend to breast cancer 21 years ago in November. She was my partner in crime, always there for me, supporting me and believing in me even when I did not believe in myself. She was my confidante and my hero. She was my Grandma.

A couple of years after her death, I joined a radio station’s Race for A Cure Team. At that time, the event took place downtown; Market Street looked like a huge sea of pink. The overwhelming feeling I had that day was unlike any other. It was heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time. I remember thinking, "Wow, I'm not alone." Everyone there that day had something in common. The compassion and kindness I experienced that day was inspiring, to say the least, and something I will never forget.

Komen’s has only ONE mission – to end breast cancer forever…a world without breast cancer. They provide funding for research; they provide care to not just patients but those who love and care for them as well. They make resources available to the community to ensure that everyone affected by this disease has a safe place to share their stories, grieve, and find strength to move forward. They advocate and fight for the rights of patients.
