My Story

This year, I joined the Komen community and registered for the Susan G. Komen MORE THAN PINK Walk. I am dedicated to Komen's mission of ending breast cancer forever, and I need your help as breast cancer has also affected me

Please consider making a tax-deductible donation today in support of my fundraising efforts.

I’ve always had a complicated relationship with my breasts. They started growing when I was 12, and I’ve been complaining about them ever since. I couldn’t wear cute bathing tops, strapless dresses, or fit bras right. I was waiting for the day I could have the surgery of my dreams, a breast lift with a slight reduction. And guess what? That dream came true last year when I was 45! I was over the moon with the results. My breasts were perky and a little smaller, so I could finally buy the cutest bralettes and strappy sports bras. I was so excited that I had them in my cart when I got a call from my surgeon. The pathology results from my right breast came back positive for DCIS in SITU Stage 0. I was shocked to hear the words ‘Breast Cancer.’ I immediately started googling the diagnosis. My surgeon told me that Stage 0 is very treatable and referred me to an oncologist. I had surgery on October 28th, 2024, and was diagnosed a week later on November 5th, 2024. I was stunned. I went to see the oncologist, who was very thorough but had to refer me to a doctor in my network. However, they also recommended a double mastectomy with reconstruction. My husband and I were shocked, overwhelmed, confused, and distraught. After seeing my current oncologist and a radiologist, we all agreed that the first recommendation was the best option for me. I had to get through the holidays, have a breast MRI (that was fun), and genealogy testing all leading up to what would be the most traumatic surgery of my life. I also had to wrap my head around losing my breasts that have been a part of me and who I was for all these years. Here I am in March, currently recovering from a double mastectomy with reconstruction surgery still wrapping my head around how I got here and if I’ll ever feel like the same person I was when I had my dream surgery just a few months ago. This journey is tough, emotionally, physically, and mentally. It’s probably the hardest thing I’ve ever had to go through. But I’m so grateful for my doctors and my support system of family and friends. My advice is to take it one day at a time. Remember, you’re stronger than you think. Be your own advocate and do what feels right for you. Your body, your choice! Hearing other women’s stories has really helped me through mine. Don’t be afraid to reach out for help and resources. Talking to other women has made me feel less alone.
