My Story
I was diagnosed with breast cancer after going for my first mammogram at the age of 40. I went in March and after not immediately hearing anything, I told my friend I thought I was good to go. I wasn’t. I received a call that I needed to come in for a sonogram. This was on Good Friday, March 29, 2013. Next it was a biopsy and on April 10, 2013 I received the news it was in fact cancer. They tell you to bring someone with you to appointments like this. I know why they do. As I sat there with my parents, they were listening and asking questions. I was begging God not to let me throw up on the table. It was a whirlwind after that an MRI, MRI biopsy, genetic testing and surgery. Thankfully, it was caught early. I was lucky. Radiation was hard on me, but thankfully there was no chemo. I moved from 6 month rechecks, to yearly. I was released from my specialist. Things were good. This year, however, my tumor markers were elevated higher than they have ever been. The doctor order scans. My bones were good, but they saw something on my lung. The doctor decided to wait 3 months and rescan. This year on Good Friday, I will have another scan. This is the fist time since being diagnosed that I don’t know where I am with my cancer journey. A new doctor asked during an appointment if I was in remission. I don’t know. I am waiting to find out which path I am on. The good news is that no matter the path I have family and friends that are there with me. I don’t have to fight alone. This why I try to raise money each year. To help others, to provide services, so no on fights alone.
