Marci's Story (from my perspective)

A couple of months ago, a woman I hold very close to my heart, Marci Balderas, was diagnosed with Stage IV breast cancer.  For those who are lucky enough to know the Balderas family, you know how special they are. For those of you who are not as familiar, I will try my best...

Marci and Jose are middle school sweethearts with two children, Anthony and Kayla. I met Anthony in kindergarten. He has been my big brother ever since (even though he's only 9 days older than me). We grew up just a couple blocks away and have been friends for well over 22 years. Anthony is currently living in Idaho, coaching baseball for Lewis-Clark State College. Kayla just started her junior year at TCU. She is brilliant and kind to everyone around her, and I am honored to call her my little sister. Jose has dedicated his entire career to the training and development of youth baseball players. Anyone lucky enough to know Jose knows how grounded and loyal this man is. He wears many hats as a husband, father, friend, coach, and mentor, and not only he can juggle them all, he truly is the most amazing man I've ever met. Last but certainly not least, the star of the show, Marci. Like Jose, Marci also wears many hats. She is best known as Mama Bear because she has dedicated her life to raising and caring for her children. She is an outstanding mom who has attended countless baseball games and cheer competitions to support Anthony and Kayla. Marci's smile is infectious, and you can't help but smile when around her.

Marci is now receiving weekly chemotherapy treatments and is fighting like a warrior! Her courage, strength, and resilience has been so inspiring to watch.

Marci and Jose always show up for their children and those they love. They are the most loyal, selfless, and loving family I have ever met. Their constant support for those around them is one of a kind. My life and my family's life are so much better with them in it. They are the best people who deserve the world and so much more, which is why I will do everything I can to help Marci and others who are or have been affected by breast cancer.

If you have made it this far, I want to thank you. This family means a whole lot to me and so many others. If you can, please consider making a tax-deductible donation to help Susan G. Komen's mission of ending breast cancer FOREVER. Your support helps us get one step closer to a world without breast cancer. Funds raised help support breakthrough research and provide assistance to those facing breast cancer today who need our support. Whether it's emotional support via Komen's helpline, financial support through Komen's financial assistance program, or navigation services to break down barriers to care, Komen will be there for them.

With all my love,

Kristin
