My Story
This year, I joined the Komen community and registered for the Susan G. Komen MORE THAN PINK Walk. I am dedicated to Komen's mission of ending breast cancer forever, and I need your help. Please consider making a tax-deductible donation today in support of my fundraising efforts.
In October 2023 during my annual mammogram, the technician saw something on the diagnostic screen that appeared abnormal and immediately called for the doctor to take a look. I had not had any symptoms, pain, or discomfort. This was my annual exam and I expected to have the same results that I usually get, “normal”.
The doctor knew immediately that the calcifications needed a second look. I was then scheduled for a biopsy and given the results which was “stage one ductile carcinoma”. I was in shock because nothing had given me any indication of that diagnosis especially since there was no one in my family that ever had breast cancer.
After a MRI, lumpectomy surgery, infection, radiation therapy, shingles, first and second burns over my entire breast, as well as dealing with clinical depression, I made it to the other side with the help of my doctors, psychiatrist and friends. I not only survived, I am thriving!
This October 2024, I celebrate 10 years cancer free. It hasn’t been easy or fun, but it’s been a wild ride. I’m a better person for it because it taught me to have more empathy, love, compassion, and more importantly ...grace. I’m more myself than I ever was. Can’t wait to see what happens next.
