My Story
Finding out my cancer had returned in November 2023 after 14 years in remission and a double mastectomy, was truly unexpected and heartbreaking. As I’m sure many of you can attest, any survivor’s worst fear is hearing their cancer has come back. While this diagnosis has brought a set of new challenges, I’m grateful to have the best support system and a phenomenal care team and treatment plan in place.
Following my diagnosis last fall, I underwent surgery to remove the tumors in my breast. I took the winter to recover and rest, and I am now on oral chemotherapy treatments and will begin radiation soon. While I know I still have a long road ahead, I’m feeling positive about the path I am taking and look forward to beating this cancer once again.
When I think back on my breast cancer treatment fourteen years ago compared to now, it’s amazing to see how far medicine and technology has advanced to evolve the treatments available for those with cancer. I have no doubt this is because of the work done by organizations like Susan G. Komen that are dedicated to funding critical breast cancer research.
I not only know first-hand what it’s like to battle this terrible disease, but I also know the heartbreaking experience of losing a loved one to it. My work for Susan G. Komen and the breast cancer community has always been fueled by these experiences.
And I know I’m not alone. The sad reality is that one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime.
While I personally am fortunate to have a strong support system and good health insurance, we know many people across the state are not in the same position.
That is why it is so critical that we continue to raise funds to support the programs Susan G. Komen has in place. From investing in breakthrough research to prevent and cure breast cancer to providing financial support to those in our community battling this disease, the dollars raised for Komen fuel our shared mission to save lives.
