My name is Nicole Patel and I have been with Guidehouse since July 2019. If you had asked me ten years ago where I would be today, I would have said something like “serving as an officer in the Army Medical Services Corps.” However, in November of 2013, I had a nagging pain in my right breast that I could no longer ignore. My gynecologist said I had mastitis and antibiotics would fix all. Eight months, a new provider, one mammogram, and several biopsies later, I was diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) on July 28, 2014. My providers shared that my best option would be a mastectomy. I like symmetry and opted for bilateral (also, prophylactic for my left side), undergoing surgery on September 2, 2014.
It has been ten years since my cancer journey began. Since then, I have learned a few things I would like to share with all of you.
It has been ten years and still I feel the pain, physically and emotionally. I eventually earned my graduate degree, got married, and now have a wonderful son. I have also had numerous reconstructive surgeries, cancer scares, and regular reminders of my journey. Whether it’s the struggle with my body image or having to tell a lactation consultant that I can’t breastfeed my newborn child, I often am reminded of both the trauma and how far I have come.
As a member of the Guidehouse community, I ask that you consider donating to the Susan G. Komen foundation. If you cannot donate, I ask that you be a voice that spreads awareness for the breast cancer community.
I would like to thank Kate for setting up this fundraising page and giving me an opportunity to share my story.
Warm wishes,
Nicole
