Team Heather: 2022
22 years ago, Team Heather was formed to prepare my then 25 year-old sister, Heather, for her breast cancer battle to come. Just before that year’s race in 2001, Heather had recently been diagnosed with Stage 3b breast cancer – at the time, the youngest breast cancer patient her team of doctors had every treated – and was told she was in for the fight for her life. That race steeled her for the 12 months of surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiation to come.
The following year, Team Heather: 2002 reassembled to celebrate a young, newly-married woman in remission. Heather returned home, was diagnosed with 4 brain tumors, and passed away five months later.
In 2003, Team Heather once again walked the streets of our nation’s capital, surrounded by thousands of inspirational survivors, but without our beloved one.
Each year since, Team Heather has worked tirelessly to make an impact in this fight against breast cancer. To date, this dedicated group of warriors has raised over $601,191.56 for the fight against breast cancer, and for the underprivileged women and men who benefit from Susan G. Komen’s life-saving commitment.
Christmas Eve, 2020, my mother, Rebecca, was diagnosed with her third round of breast cancer, underwent a double mastectomy in 2021, and is thankfully healed. In 2020, my mother-in-law, Lee, was diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer and is continuing to undergo chemotherapy and other treatments.
Years ago, our Team Heather efforts transitioned from simply continuing Heather’s fight to the much larger purpose of fighting for the next young woman diagnosed with breast cancer. Won’t you help us by making a donation of any amount, today?
Together, we CAN make a difference!
