KC's Story

As many of you know, last year around this time I was diagnosed with breast cancer.  I'm happy to say that at this point I am cancer free!  This year, I joined the ONE Komen community and registered for the Susan G. Komen MORE THAN PINK Walk.  I am dedicated to Komen's ONE mission of ending breast cancer forever.

We have come a long way. In my case, I went in for my regular mammogram which turned up some "unclear" pictures.  The medical community leapt into action and kept at it until they found and removed a very small cancer--3MM.  Years back this would not have been found until it was much farther along and much more dangerous. I am so grateful for all those who have come before me and fought for the life-saving technology that has made this a blip on my life's journey.  I am also grateful for the wonderful support of my friends, family, especially my 3 children, and my employer. Going through a cancer, even as minor as mine was, is not easy. It's emotionally draining, energy draining, and time consuming.

I walk with MeetupBoomser at the More Than Pink Walk to help make sure that all cancer victims can get the high-quality healthcare and support they will need. Your support helps us get ONE step closer to a world without breast cancer. Funds raised help support breakthrough research and provide assistance to those facing breast cancer today who need our support.  Whether it’s emotional support via Komen’s helpline, financial support through Komen’s treatment assistance program, or help navigating their care journey. Let’s show breast cancer patients there’s a whole community standing by their side.

Will you please join me in this fight by making a donation today?

UPDATE--1 week until we walk: I’d like to tell a little more about my cancer journey. I share this so you understand what a journey it is and that anyone going through it needs all the help they can get. Even with a simple case like mine (3mm of cancer), it takes a.machine of people to pull you through. I hope you will support the cause.
As I said in my original post, I went in for the routine mammogram that turned out to be anything but routine. But, of course, they did not call me up afterwards and say “you have cancer and we have to get it out.” That would not have been a journey but more like removing a wart. After that first mammogram there was a call saying, “your pictures were unclear, it happens all the time and is probably nothing. We just need to make sure.” Over the course of the next 5 months, I got “called back” for more pictures, then a biopsy, then an MRI, visits with 3 new doctors, then a surgery, then another surgery. Each time, being told that ”it’s just a precaution” and “only 5 in 100 people” ever have the problem we are screening for. After a while, you are sure that you are that 1 person who will not make it through this.
Once the doctors were all but certain that they had gotten all the cancer out of my body, they recommended radiation treatments to make sure than none of those cells had gone rogue and started their own cancer factory elsewhere. This involved body scanning, tattooing, another mammogram, and daily radiation treatments for 4 weeks.
2 months later, once I thought it was over, I realized that I didn’t have the energy to do the things that I loved, even my nightly walks. I was turning into a couch potato. I thought it would just take a few weeks and things would get back to normal but they didn’t. That’s when I discovered the Life With Cancer was not just a feel good place for those who were “really sick” but was where I needed to start. There I got some fitness advice, enrolled in a Tai Chi class, tried some yoga, and got motivated to do more. I started walking more frequently again and slowly got some energy back.
Once past that hurdle, I got to work on my arm. The scar tissue from the surgery was keeping me from having full extension in my arm so I decided to act on the referral for physical therapy. I’m so glad I did. After a few months, the team at Virginia Sports Medicine has gotten my arm pretty much back to good. Next week on to the nutritionist to work on my cholesterol—side effect of the meds I’m on.
As for the rest of me: that’s where the MeetupBoomer team comes in. Thanks to this great group of people, I have pushed myself to hike, bike, and have fun more. This weekend I did the Dover Amish Pie Ride—24 miles. And next weekend I will walk with the team at the Susan G. Komen More Than Pink Walk.
After more than a year on this journey, I am finally getting to feel like, and get more time for, myself again. I could not have done it without the many, many people who helped in all the different ways I’ve mentioned and do not want to underestimate the support of my family, friends, and workplace. It takes more than a village to get through cancer—it takes teams of experts all pulling for you. I hope you will be one of those.
