I have participated in the Race for the Cure since I was diagnosed with breast cancer 24 years ago. At the time, my kids were 5 and 7. I was worried that they would have to grow up without a mom. Thankfully, after a year of active treatment and 5 years of pills, I was in remission, where I have stayed. I was so thankful for the treatments and studies that Komen pioneered which gave me a chance to live long enough to see my kids grow up. That is why I fundraise for Komen. I want to give every woman the chance to not get breast cancer, or to survive it if they do get the dreaded disease. As of now, 1 in 8 women will get breast cancer during their lives.
The picture on my page is from several years ago when we did the race with my daughter. My son had already gone off to college so he was not able to participate. Prior to that, we had always run every race as a family. Since the race was virtual last year, and I don't have a photo, I decided to go retro. After all, my kids are a large part of the reason that I fundraise. I am happy to report that both of my kids became engaged this year. I am even more thankful that it looks like I will be able to see them both get married next year. Since being diagnosed, this was always my goal!
