Tis the season, my favorite month is almost here! Getting a kick start this year to raise awareness for breast cancer. This year, we will running/walking at the point pleasant board walk starting at New Jersey Ave, going down and back (approx 2 miles) starting at 8am. Feel free to invite friends and family, the more the merrier
Little back story as to why this is so important to me. During finals week in my 4th year of pharmacy school, I felt a lump and made an appointment to get it checked out, not knowing my life was about to change. Given my age, my doctors were very aggressive in getting me into my appointments. I had an ultra sound scheduled a few days after I found the lump, and that same day my doctors made sure I was mammogrammed and biopsied without having to wait for ultrasound results. A few days later at 26 years old, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I ended up having double mastectomy three weeks later with total reconstruction, finishing up with a second surgery after I finished my fall semester of pharmacy school. I was lucky enough to not need chemotherapy as the surgery removed all cancerous cells. The Susan G Komen foundation helped me financially and paid for my housing my 5th year of pharmacy school, since I was unable to work the summer going into my last year of school. I am grateful for my outcome and thankful for all of the love and support I received and continue to receive as a survivor. As the world’s largest and most impactful breast cancer organization, Susan G. Komen supports more breast cancer research than any other nonprofit outside the U.S. government, while providing real-time help to those facing the disease. Every year I try to give back to this great foundation, to help out those who need it and provide information on breast cancer.
As always, mammogramming your boobs are better than instagramming them
