Today, I want to share with you a personal journey that has changed my life forever - my experience with breast cancer.
My world was turned upside down the moment I received my diagnosis at the start of this year. But, through the chaos and uncertainty, I’ve found strength, resilience and hope along the way. I’m sharing my story to raise awareness and to support others who may be walking a similar path. I hope my story will inspire those who may be facing their own challenges.
January 4, 2024: I never thought I’d be the one to hear those dreaded words, “YOU HAVE CANCER.” Cancer was the last thing I expected to happen to me. It was a shock. A wake up call that changed everything. Despite my healthy lifestyle and lack of family history, I still found myself battling a cancer diagnosis. It was an awakening and a reminder that cancer can affect anyone, regardless of how well we take care of ourselves.
The whole month of January was very stressful and overwhelming due to the number of doctor’s appointments and tests. I was scared about the unknown, but was grateful for the medical team caring for me. I tried hard to just take it one day at a time and stay positive.
The results were in and I was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma, HER 2 positive. A highly treatable, but aggressive form of breast cancer.
Even as a nurse, I was taken aback by this diagnosis. Despite my medical background, I realized I didn’t know all the details about this specific type of cancer. I had to learn about the unique characteristics of my diagnosis, treatment options and what to expect along the way. It was a humbling reminder that every patient’s journey is different.
February 5th I underwent a bilateral mastectomy. The surgery was a significant milestone in my cancer journey and I’m grateful for the skilled medical team who performed the procedure. While the recovery process was challenging, I slowly regained my strength and mobility. Just when I thought I finished that surgical battle, I spent the following months receiving 6 rounds of chemotherapy to ensure any remaining cancer cells be eliminated.
Chemotherapy led me to experience a roller coaster of emotions. I had feelings of fear, anger, sadness, and resilience. Some days I felt like I was trapped in a never ending storm, with waves of nausea and fatigue crashing over me. Some days I felt like screaming, because the emotions were building up inside of me and I knew I had to let it out before I exploded. Some days I felt numb, like I was just going through the motions with no control. But through it all, I tried to find moments of beauty and joy. A sunrise, a good cup of coffee, a loved one’s hug. I was learning to be kind to myself, to acknowledge my emotions and to seek help when I needed it. I needed it.
I’m still learning to cherish the little things and to hold on to hope, no matter how small it seems. To find strength in the midst of weakness and to emerge stronger on the other side. As I navigate this challenging cancer journey, I find comfort in knowing that God is with me every step of the way. My trust and faith in Him gives me strength and peace. Through the ups and downs of cancer, I’ve learned to lean on God’s presence. I have faith that he will see me through to healing and restoration. He is my rock, my refuge, and healer.
I believe in the power of prayers as it provided me peace and solace. My prayer warriors are my powerful source of comfort and hope during challenging times.
God blessed me with a supportive family and friends. I am forever grateful to the incredible individuals who stood by me during my cancer journey. Their unwavering support, love and encouragement gave me the strength to face each day with courage and hope.
