Alex's Fundraiser for Susan G. Komen

A few years ago, one of my daughters faced serious health issues. Shortly after her hospital stay I scheduled my annual mammogram. As a busy, working single mom of two it was easy to put off appointments for myself but her illness reminded me that I need to take care of my health as well. My mother is a breast cancer survivor, so I knew the importance of early screening however I never expected my results to come back abnormal.

In fall 2024, everything changed. After a biopsy, I was diagnosed with Stage 1, grade 3 invasive ductal carcinoma. I had no symptoms and I couldn’t feel a lump. But suddenly, I was the one who was sick. I was terrified and unsure how to explain it to my young daughters while trying to stay strong for them.

My treatment plan initially included surgery and radiation but that changed to include chemotherapy after my pathology results and a Oncotype score. The months that followed brought intense nausea, weakness, and bone pain. I preserved half of my hair through cold-capping, but the rest fell out in chunks when I ran my hands through my hair. My energy was extremely low which made it difficult to be there for my kids. Running was something I loved but it felt like I would never be able to do it again when I was winded just walking to the mailbox.

In the middle of treatment, I also lost my stepfather to pancreatic cancer. Life was overwhelming at this point but I had the most incredible support around me. Friends, family, colleagues, and even strangers carried me through.

Now, after ringing the bell, I’m ignoring the "what-ifs" and being engaged in life in a way I never had before. I want to make meaning out of my experience and do my part to support others facing this disease.

I cannot thank enough the many doctors and nurses treated me. I never doubted I was in great hands and appreciate their incredible expertise in treating my disease. I am grateful to have access to such great medical care and want to the same for all people facing this disease.

I’m honored to run the TCS NYC Marathon in support of Susan G. Komen. A marathon is a challenge—but it’s nothing compared to what so many cancer patients face every day.

Why I run

I run for the survivors in my life—my mother, my aunt, my friends, my coworkers.

I run because research saved me, and every patient deserves access to the best care available.

I run because no one should have to choose between their health and financial stability.

If you’re able, please consider supporting this cause.
