Running the 2025 NYC Marathon with Team Komen!
I am so excited to be running the 2025 NYC Marathon (my first marathon!) for Team Komen. As the world’s largest and most impactful breast cancer organization, Susan G. Komen supports more breast cancer research than any other nonprofit outside the U.S. government, while providing real-time help to those facing the disease.
My mom first walked the Susan G. Komen 3 Day in 2007. 4 short months later, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and the BRCA1 mutation. I was 8 years old, my sister was 5, and my brother was 2. We spent that year watching her go through a mastectomy and reconstruction surgeries, as well as chemotherapy. It forever changed our family and community. Thanks to early detection, my mom just celebrated her 17 year anniversary of her diagnosis, cancer free.
The community of the Susan G. Komen 3-Day has been a source of love and support for me and my family for 18 years. I participated as a 3-Day Youth Corps crew member 3 times, and walked the 3-Day, 60 mile walk myself 3 times. When I learned I also carry the BRCA1+ mutation, I knew that I had a community who would understand and support me through anything the future brings.
Although I am trading 60 miles for 26.2, I know that I will have the support of our 3-Day family every step - and I'm so grateful for the support of everyone in my life who has donated to events and encouraged me since my first Susan G. Komen event in 2011 :).
I will be running for my mom - for all of the bonus years that I've been able to live with her. I'm also running for all of the women in my life - my sister, my aunts (real + bonus), my dear friends, my cousins, my coworkers - who all deserve a lifetime without breast cancer. I'm also excited to run for my grandfather - who passed away in 2008 and was also a BRCA1 carrier. He ran marathons (including NYC) and was there for my very first race. I know he would be proud!
